Tenuta di Ghizzano 2020 Mimesi Sangiovese DOC
Terre di Pisa • Tuscany, Italy
Amphora-Aged. Biodynamic. Pure Sangiovese.
The 2020 Mimesi Sangiovese is one of the most distinctive expressions of Sangiovese produced in Tuscany today. Crafted by Tenuta di Ghizzano in the rolling hills of Terre di Pisa, this tiny-production wine showcases the remarkable purity that can be achieved when exceptional fruit, biodynamic farming, and thoughtful minimal-intervention winemaking come together.
The name Mimesi, derived from the ancient Greek concept of "representation" or "true expression," perfectly captures the philosophy behind this wine: allowing the vineyard, vintage, and grape variety to speak with complete authenticity.
Unlike most premium Tuscan Sangiovese wines, Mimesi is never aged in oak. Instead, it matures for up to 20 months in handcrafted cocciopesto amphorae, allowing gentle micro-oxygenation while preserving the grape's vibrant fruit, minerality, freshness, and terroir expression without masking it with wood.
Produced from a single south-facing vineyard planted more than three decades ago and farmed according to Certified Organic and Demeter Biodynamic principles, every cluster is harvested by hand before fermenting naturally with indigenous yeasts.
The result is an elegant, transparent and profoundly terroir-driven Sangiovese that ranks among Tuscany's most compelling modern wines.
Critical Acclaim
94 Points — Falstaff
"Rich bright ruby red with inviting aromas of ripe cherries, bright spices, geranium, candied raspberry, orange zest and rock candy. Wonderfully juicy with vibrant fruit, beautiful salinity, vegetal freshness and a remarkably long finish."
93 Points — Wine Enthusiast
"Classic elegance defines this wine, offering cherries, orange peel and graphite layered over Mediterranean herbs. The palate delivers ripe cherries, orange marmalade and finishes with notes of salted dark chocolate. A superb ambassador for the Sangiovese of Pisa."
92 Points — Decanter
"Produced from only 1,500 bottles and aged exclusively in cocciopesto amphorae, this textural Sangiovese offers red and black cherries, dried herbs and petrichor with layers of strawberry, iron, earth and black tea. Silky tannins and bright acidity make it exceptionally food friendly."
Tasting Notes
Color
Brilliant ruby red with vivid youthful reflections.
Aroma
The bouquet opens with vibrant aromas of wild cherry, black cherry, raspberry, blood orange zest, dried rose petals and violets, followed by Mediterranean herbs, crushed stone, graphite, delicate spices and earthy mineral nuances.
Palate
Elegant, energetic and beautifully balanced, the palate delivers layers of juicy red cherry, wild raspberry and black cherry supported by silky fine-grained tannins and vibrant natural acidity. Notes of orange peel, black tea, iron, savory herbs and subtle spice unfold over a distinctly saline mineral core, leading to a remarkably long, fresh and refined finish.
Rather than emphasizing power, Mimesi captivates with precision, transparency and purity—showing Sangiovese in one of its most authentic forms.
Winemaking
Every step in producing Mimesi is designed to preserve purity and express terroir.
- 100% Sangiovese from a single vineyard

- Hand harvested
- Indigenous yeast fermentation
- Fermented in concrete tanks
- Aged 18–20 months in Drunk Turtle cocciopesto amphorae

The cocciopesto amphorae, inspired by ancient Roman building techniques, allow gentle oxygen exchange while preserving freshness, minerality, and fruit definition in a way impossible to achieve with traditional barrels.
Vineyard & Terroir
Located in the Terre di Pisa DOC, the Il Monte vineyard sits approximately 180 meters above sea level on south-facing slopes.
The combination of limestone-rich soils, Mediterranean climate, biodynamic farming and low yields creates wines of exceptional aromatic complexity, freshness and longevity.
Only about 1,800 bottles are produced annually.
