The 2013 Pinot Noir Santa Cruz Mountains is a terrific expression of mountain fruit, especially when tasted beside the San Mateo release. Firm red fruits, dusty stone-like minerality, white flowers and a touch of rose all emerge from this medium-bodied, silky, lively and elegantly styled Pinot Noir. Possessing solid underlying tannin and integrated acidity, it will have 10-12 years of overall longevity. (JD) (7/2015)

The 2013 Pinot Noir Santa Cruz Mountains shows a much darker side of Pinot, especially next to the San Mateo County, Rhys's other appellation wine. The flavors are bold and deeply spiced to the core, with layers of dark red and bluish fruit that emerge over time. Leather, cedar and cloves help shape the creamy finish. This is one of the hidden gems in the Rhys lineup. Don't miss it! (AG) (7/2015)

Here the equally elegant nose is both more expressive and a bit more deeply pitched as well with its layered array of both red and dark Pinot fruit, violet and lilac scents. There is a lovely sense of vibrancy to the detailed medium-bodied flavors that possess noticeably more mid-palate concentration as well as better depth and length. There isn't the same finesse but there is undeniably more here. (4/2016)
Winemaker’s Notes:
“With terrific yields in 2013, we took the unusual step of declassifying a sizeable portion of the Horseshoe and Alpine Pinot Noir production. The result is a gorgeous, silky and elegant Pinot Noir loaded with mountain mineral and spice.”
About The Vineyard:
One of the wine world’s best kept secrets, the Santa Cruz Mountains have long produced some of the New World’s very finest wines. For decades, inspirational wines like Ridge Monte Bello and Mount Eden Chardonnay have thrilled serious wine enthusiasts. In addition, there have been many legendary Pinot Noirs from producers like Mount Eden, David Bruce and Santa Cruz Mountain Vineyards. At their best, Santa Cruz Mountain wines offer all the key ingredients for truly fine wine – breathtaking balance, terrific concentration, uncommon minerality, thrilling complexity and Old World age worthiness. With approximately 600 acres planted to Pinot Noir in the entire appellation, Santa Cruz Mountain Pinots are also quite rare.
